Can You Eat on 1 Dollar a Day?

Posted by Shannon Buck on June 29, 2009

This link will lead you to a short article and a YouTube video describing an experiment on low-cost eating. I cannot view YouTube videos on my computer, so I am wondering if someone could gives us a rundown of what is said.

If this can be done (at $1.00 per meal or less), then we may want to have a challenge here on the blog. Let me know your views on this. I could post the challenge on my other blogs, too.

Maybe everyone would agree to let me combine all of their ideas, tips and recipes into an e-book that we can each have a free copy of. Then we could sell it here for a $1 or $2.

Let me know if this is something that you would be interested in, and I will get it all set up.

    Hi Shannon,
I will write to you what it said:

Did you know that 1 in 10 Americans are trying to live on $1 per meal? A new Documentary called “Food Stamped” follows a couple (a nutrition educator in low-income neighborhoods and her filmmaker husband) as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet on a food stamp budget of just a buck a meal. Food justice activists, nutrition experts, politicians, and ordinary people living on food stamps weigh in on the struggles low-income Americans face everyday.

What is on you tube is only 2:33 minutes…at the end it stated more to come. The filmmaker said he is always hungry. They are allowed only 1 spoonful of peanut butter per day. The nutritionist told her husband they had to purchase lettuce over coffee because coffee was $10 per pound. They showed the nutritionist bringing cans/bottles to a recycling center to get a check for .82 cents and they showed her going through a dumpster at an organic bakery outlet (she found loaves with mold, but managed to find one to take).

I will let you know if there is another video from them…Janel in NJ

    • Thank you very much. I kind of figured that they would get food/money from food from other sources. I know what the foodstamp budget is like, and how hard it is to eat on that small amount of money. Many people also visit food cupboards, which really stretches the food budget.

Please let me know if there are any more documentaries on this subject.

I don’t know about $1/day, but there are some discussion threads on a food forum I read written by an individual who did an experiment where she ate off $3/day for for 31 days. This was $3 for one person. You might be interested in reading about her experiment for ideas. Here is a link to the conclusion thread (which includes links to each weekly thread). http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/429348
